COVID-19 Information and resources
I spent 12 years as a legislative aide and analyst in the Florida Legislature prior to being elected to the Tamarac Commission. That gives me the experience needed to go to Tallahassee and advocate on behalf of our City. I advocate on behalf of the funding needed to complete infrastructure projects in Tamarac and I advocate for or against bills that have an impact on Tamarac.
One of the biggest and most important fights going on in Tallahassee for a few years now is the continuous battle to stop many in the Legislature from encroaching on Home Rule. Home Rule is that portion of the Florida Constitution and state statute which allows cities, towns and villages across the state to create local laws or ordinances.
Each year there are bills filed that would take more and more of local governments ability to govern our residents and tries to more and more power in our state government. There is also the danger of unfunded mandates which require local government to take over some portion of a program or regulation where the is no additional funding given to the local government to take on this additional burden.
I will be watching those bills filed this Legislative Session that affect Home Rule, would be an unfunded mandate to our City or that would have an impact on our City.
Starting with the Tracker from 3-16-2020, I will be informing you of what has happened with the bills that passed in the 2020 Legislative Session that I was tracking. Once the bills have been signed by the Officers of each chamber, they will then be sent to the Governor. Once the Governor gets the bill he has 10 days to veto the bill or sign it into law. If the Governor doesn't do either, it becomes law without his signature.
